The Steps Taken To Set Up And Facilitate A Seminar

Research cross-discipline Socratic seminars.

Prepare a Socratic seminar activity that incorporates writing. Complete the following:

• Select an article or age-appropriate book as the basis for the seminar. Choose something interesting that will get the students talking.
• Identify a social studies and literacy state standard(s) that the seminar will align to, and a topic that relates to the standard.
• Create a discussion prompt for the seminar.
• Create a writing prompt for students to complete to self-assess their preparation, active participation, and listening skills after the conclusion of the seminar.
• Identify teacher strategies, behaviors, and discussion stems, as well as student behaviors and discussion stems for the seminar.
• List the steps you would take to set up and facilitate the seminar.
• Identify ways you can incorporate additional writing activities to extend students’ learning on the topic of the article or expository text beyond the seminar.
