Jeff Orlowski’s documentary film The Social Dilemma addresses how social media and other online-driven sites thrive off of human attention. It highlights the desperation of the companies to attract data. Andy Mills’ podcast Rabbit Hole discusses similar themes; however, it focuses more on the consumer and their ability to escape these “dangerous” echo chambers.

Is the consumer to blame for the potential side effects they may face from their consumption of media? Or, in contrast, do social media companies have a greater moral responsibility to reduce the addictiveness of their algorithms, while risking their financial obligation to shareholders that seek greater profits? In essence, which text proves its point more strongly: the film or the podcast? How and why?

You can also tie in ideas from Lee McIntyre’s “The Decline of Traditional Media” if that’s helpful.
