Literary Analysis
Select any of the stories that we have read this semester. You should also select at least one news story about the Covid 19 pandemic. Create an argument comparing or contrasting this historical story to the events in your news story. Consider the formal components that we have discussed this far. Please also be sure to use evidence from the text to support your claim. You may certainly compare your text to recent events but focus on the story itself.
This is an interpretative process, so don’t think there is one right or wrong answer. Whatever you decide, write it out as an argument. This is your thesis statement. Next, find formal elements that you feel help the text say this message (i.e. plot, character, point of view, simile, metaphor, word choice (think about meaning and connotation), voice/speaker, etc.). Use these components to create strong body paragraphs that support your thesis. Don’t summarize the story any more than is necessary to support your argument. Assume that your reader has read the story.
This assignment should be a formal essay and should have a clear introduction, a thesis, and body paragraphs with topic sentences that serve as sub-claims.
