  • Introduction (1 paragraph)
    • Includes an interesting hook
    • Provides focused background information and context on your topic
    • Gives a sense of the “conversation” surrounding your argument
    • Contains a clear, forceful, thesis statement
  • Body paragraphs (4-5 paragraphs)
    • Begin with clear, forceful topic sentences that clearly stem from your thesis statement
    • Provides any additional explanation required to fully understand the topic sentence
    • Utilize appropriate transitions, both in the topic sentences and throughout the paragraph
    • Contain support through relevant quotations/paraphrases from appropriate sources
    • Integrate quotations by embedding them into a sentence or introducing them with a signal phrase
    • Utilize thoughtful analysis to demonstrate how your support helps to prove your topic sentence, and thus your thesis statement
    • Represents an opposing perspective through the inclusion of a counterargument paragraph
  • Conclusion (1 paragraph)
    • Briefly recaps your essay
    • Explains how/why it is relevant (Why are you arguing this? What’s the point?)
  • Incorporates 4-5 sources
    • You may use the same sources you used for Essay 2
    • You must incorporate at least new source that was found through individual research
    • At least one source MUST be a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal article found through the LATTC Library Databases
  • MLA format throughout
    Thorough, complete Works Cited page (in MLA format)
