Your first double-entry response will be based on ONE of the first three stories of the book, “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars,” “Nilda,” or “Alma.” WRITE ABOUT ONE STORY ONLY. You must incorporate themes from Diaz’s Harvard lecture. For example consider the following:

  • Think about what Diaz says in his Harvard Lecture about issues of immigration, Dominican heteronormative masculinity, race, and/or poverty.  How is this reflected in any of his stories?
  • Why do you think Diaz uses Yunior’s infidelities to critique issues of race and racism, immigration, masculinity and poverty?  Why is this important for Diaz and what is the significance of this?

Ensure that you do  the following:

  • CHOOSE ONE quote from the story that you place at the top of your response.  Remember to choose a quote that you feel is significant or important to the story. CITE THIS QUOTE IN PROPER MLA FORMAT.
  • INCLUDE IN YOUR RESPONSE ONE QUOTE FROM THE HARVARD LECTURE VIDEO
  • One to two  paragraphs of interpretation/analysis in which you discuss the significance of the quote you chose in relation to the events occurring in the story.  Refer to terms from the Prezi presentation such as symbol, metaphor, characterization, irony in your interpretation. HINT: You may even want to discuss the title of one of the stories.  For example, what is the significance of the sun, the moon and the stars?
 
  • Use proper MLA format when citing your quote.  Place the quote in quotations and use in-text parentheticals at the end of the quote. DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE PAGE NUMBER OF THE QUOTE
  • Use proper MLA format for your heading and number the pages of your document (see Overview of MLA format from Week 1)
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph. NO BLOCK PARAGRAPHS
  • Double space your paper.
  • Do not add extra space between your paragraphs.  HIT ENTER ONCE and begin your second paragraph
  • If appropriate to your interpretation, include quotes from the story as support writing evidence for your arguments.
