PICK ANY ONE PROMPT TO ANSWER

Edgar Allan Poe’s wife Virginia Clemm died from tuberculosis in 1847, yet “The Raven” was written and published in 1845, two years earlier. Based on your familiarity with and understanding of Poe and his writing, what do you conclude was the motivation in compiling such a narrative poem with so devastating a theme as the death of a spouse? For this response, make at least one reference to “The Raven,” Poe’s biography and the concept(s) addressed.

We studied the works of three writers this semester: (1) Tennessee Williams, (2) Edgar Allan Poe and (3) Hermann Hesse. Discuss these writers’ literary styles (e.g., mood, theme, literary devices, etc.), supporting your response with at least one reference from each of three texts.

Loss and abandonment are addressed in Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” and Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha. Choose any three of the aforementioned literary works studied in class this semester, supporting one of these two themes, making at least one reference to each of the literary pieces addressed.

Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee” is a fictionalized illustration of Poe himself, his life and people in his life. Considering lines in the poem, other works of the writer or concepts addressed, as well as author background, make a connection between “Annabel Lee” and Poe’s life the year the ballad was written. What is this story literally and figuratively about? Who is Annabel Lee and who might she represent in Poe’s life? What does the narrator reveal about himself and what might this reveal about Poe?

How does the protagonist Siddhartha in Hermann Hesse’s novel learn to deal with loss? Make at least one reference to the novel, applying Eastern concepts and historical background of Buddha.
