You are to produce a short essay, two to three pages long. The essay is to be typewritten, double-spaced. Other criteria for format and submission further below.
The focus of this essay is to address the following topic:
The origin of religion and its value to humankind.
To write on this topic you are to do a limited amount of research in sources beyond the course textbook. At the same time, you are to draw upon relevant material in the course textbook: Making Sense of the Sacred: The Meaning of World Religions. James L. Rowell. (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2021).
In addressing the issue, you are to utilize your critical thinking and analytical skills, taking a specific perspective vis-à-vis religion in general, your position expressed in a thesis sentence (declarative statement) in the first paragraph of the essay. You can take a positive or negative view of religion. In the body of the essay, you will develop the material you wish to present in addressing the topic. At the end of the essay there is to be an appropriate concluding paragraph.
You are to deal with religion in general and NOT focus on any particular religious tradition (e.g., Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, etc.).
Your essay will be assessed for a grade on the clarity of your perspective, and it made known in a thesis sentence, the quality of the research done, the development of your material in addressing the topic, and the felicity of your English composition (grammar, paragraph construction, rational and logical presentation, avoidance of fallacies, adherence to format requirements, etc.). This is a formal academic paper and should evidence that category of writing.
Non-original materials used, whether from your research or the course textbook, are to be given proper citation. Do not present non-original material as your own. Citations can be made by use of footnotes or endnotes as well as given in paratheses immediately following the material presented. Your choice. Essay should include a resource page listing all material used in your research and include the course textbook (the latter which is to be drawn upon at least once in the essay).
Format: The essay is to be typewritten, double spaced. Margins one inch. Font no smaller than 9 and no larger than 12. The essay is to be printed on only one side of each sheet of paper.
A cover page is to show your name, the title you give your essay (be creative with title), the date due, course name, number, and section, and the professor’s name. The resource page should be a separate page from the essay itself.
Last, and this is very important, a separate, clean sheet of paper is to be provided at the end of your paper for instructor’s comments and the grade the essay will be given. Proofread your paper before submission. Correct typos, misspellings, unclear, incomplete, or run-on sentences, incorrect punctuation, etc. Staple your essay, NO paper clips, folded over corners, etc. Pages not stapled risk being lost. Make a separate copy of your essay and store your essay on your computer.
