The Connection(s) Between Language And Identity

For this paper, you will be exploring the connection(s) between language and identity in E.J. Koh’s memoir The Magical Language of Others through the lens of Li’s (2007) article “Souls and Exile.”

In other words, you’ll want to look at what a particular passage or event from the memoir connects to Li’s ideas about how the language(s) we speak can affect the way we see ourselves and others. From there, you may want to address such topics as native vs non-native speakers, bilingualism, prejudice, or globalization.

Of course, there are many other possibilities. No matter what you choose, you should explore the connections by doing some research and offering documentation for it.

You must also explain the context for your reader, as if she has not read the memoir or article. However, there is no need to provide a full summary of either. Making strong connections between the two texts should be the main goal of your paper.

Your paper should be two pages (approximately 500-600 words) long, double spaced, typed in a standard 12 pt. font (Times New Roman). You should strive to accumulate as much information as possible while also being concise and creative. Be sure to include citations for any quotes or paraphrases and list of Works Cited/References at the end.
