For your first writing assignment, write a short essay (1000 words minimum). The essay must be organized into paragraphs as described in the guidelines.

For instance, the essay must have a non-generic title (not “Writing Assignment 1”), the intro paragraph must be 3-4 sentences.

Pick one of the following two topics:

(Topic 1) Write a short essay addressing the following question. How does sociological theory help explain your membership in social groups? Choose one sociological theory (functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, feminism), and explain what it is and how it sees the social world. Then apply it, using it to explain your membership in at least one social group or organization (e.g. family, school, athletics team, religion, job, social media group, etc).

You may find addressing one, some, or none of the following questions useful. Why is membership in this group important to you? What are some of the benefits of membership? How do members differentiate themselves from non-members? Do members have power over non-members, or do certain members have power over other members? How does membership in some types of group (e.g., family) differ from membership in other types of group (e.g., job)? Regarding groups that people voluntarily join, why do they do so?

(Topic 2) Study the mass incarceration graph and my comments about mass incarceration. Write a short essay addressing the following question. How does sociological theory help explain mass incarceration? Choose one sociological theory (functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, feminism), and explain what it is and how it sees the social world. Then apply it, using it to explain the rise and/or persistence of US mass incarceration.

You may find addressing one, some, or none of the following questions useful. What does the mass incarceration graph illustrate? What is the role of race, racism, or racial injustice in mass incarceration? What is the role of socio-economic class inequality? What sort of power(s) does the criminal justice system exercise over people in jail, prison, probation, or parole? Is some low level of incarceration necessary (functional) in any society? Given that the US seems now in a process towards legalizing marijuana, was the severe attitude towards this drug in the 1980s-90s unfair or unjust? What can we do today to reduce the problem of mass incarceration?
