Look carefully at either Bull Capital from Rampurva or Lion Capital from Sarnath. What kind of power did emperor Ashoka want to convey in the image? For instance, does it seem peaceful or awe-inspiring, other-worldly or familiar? Is this feeling created by relative naturalism (imitation of natural appearances) or by relative abstraction or some combination of the two? Condense your answers into your thesis—the clear statement of the argument that you intend to demonstrate in the paper. Then write a statement of organization in which you tell how you will demonstrate your point by analyzing the formal elements of the sculpture.
Analyze how the sculptor created that effect by analyzing the formal elements listed below. Do NOT simply describe the formal effects. Rather, tell HOW each formal device creates the effect. Sentences should include phrases like “because” and “in this way.” Each formal element should be analyzed in a separate paragraph.
(a) Composition. How are the various parts of the sculpture (the body) related? Is there a natural articulation or flow between these body parts or is there a more schematic or abstract relation? How does this approach to composition create the expressive effect?
(b) Volume. Is the work relatively volumetric (three-dimensional) or does it tend to flatten out? Is it more or less volumetric that the real thing that it portrays? Why?
(c) Proportion. How does the work’s scale relate to the size of a cows or lions in reality? Are some parts exaggerated? What does this adherence or deviation from reality suggest?
(d) Line. What is the role of line in the work? Is the sculpture linear (emphasizing lines) or does it emphasize volume? Does the sculpture have curvilinear (curving) or rectilinear (straight) orientation? Do these lines create naturalistic details or abstract patterns? What are the effects of these qualities?
(e) Texture. As best you can tell, is the surface smooth or rough? Does this replicate or deviate
from the real texture of the object depicted? What effect does this create?
(f) Color. What is the role of color in the work? Is the color naturalistic or abstract? What does the presence or absence of color suggest?
Print then edit your draft. Did you sufficiently study the object? Is your title informative? Is your thesis clear? Is the organization reasonable? Is each paragraph unified by a topic sentence?
