Prompt: Neoliberalism has been identified as a key component of media globalization. Although often described as a set of economic policies, neoliberal ideology also represents a way of thinking about the world. In this paper, you will explore the implications of neoliberalism for global media in three parts.
- First, define neoliberalism as both a policy (concrete actions or goals) and an ideology (a way of thinking or vision of the world). What does neoliberalism mean? What do its proponents believe, and what do they want to see happen as a result?
- Second, explain how neoliberalism affects at least two of Steger’s (2020) four dimensions of globalization, other than economic – in other words, choose two of the following: political, cultural, or ecological.
- Third, give an example of neoliberalism affecting a particular form of media. Your example should be specific, and you should clearly explain how neoliberalism has shaped (or has been resisted by) the media example you choose.
Your paper should have an introduction and a conclusion and should spend at least one paragraph discussing each of the three points above, though I recommend two paragraphs for point #2. Each paragraph must begin with a clear topic sentence. Use citations from the readings assigned in class to make your case. You must cite at least two different sources that we have read in class.
